SUBSTANCE ABUSE 2012
1-HOUR PROGRAM (RECORDED NOVEMBER 2011)
Topics
An astounding 2.8 million Baby Boomers turn 65 this year, as will 10,000 people a day for the next 19 years. Coupled with the natural dangers of alcohol use and aging, Boomers came of age when illicit drugs were widely used and the age of people seeking substance abuse treatment is rising. Prescription drug misuse and interactions between pharmaceuticals and alcohol is an additional issue. Added concerns about dementia for an aging population complicate a lawyer's continuing practice. As we grow older, attorney impairment becomes a new problem. Learn how to assess yourself and help a colleague in this year's TRG substance abuse and stress program.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE 2011
1-HOUR PROGRAM (RECORDED NOVEMBER 2010)
Topics
Attorneys suffer from alcoholism/addiction and other mental health problems at double the rates of nonattorneys. Men in the profession are even more profoundly affected especially with depression. These conditions are not only personally devastating but can ruin an attorney's practice and lead to discipline problems. Lawyer Assistance Programs (LAPs) are available in every state and many lawyers have successfully recovered from these conditions. Learn how you can help yourself and others.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE 2010
1-HOUR PROGRAM (RECORDED NOVEMBER 2009)
Topics
A prior program told you the very sad story of an attorney who died of alcoholism at the age of 49, despite the best efforts of his family, friends and the State Bar to intervene. You have probably also heard the old saying that "drunks don't get sober until they hit bottom." However, relatively recent research in addictionology has shown that not to be true. Substance abusers can and do learn how to get and stay sober without first losing a relationship or a job or incurring criminal charges. In this year's program, you'll hear from two such attorneys - a State Bar prosecutor from Northern California, and a Southern California "Super Lawyer" and certified law expert. They will tell you how to recognize if you have a problem and get help early, and what you can do to help others in your life do the same. Finally, you will learn about State Bar resources available to help you "get off the substance abuse elevator on a top floor."

SUBSTANCE ABUSE 2009
1-HOUR PROGRAM (RECORDED NOVEMBER 2008)
Topics Most lawyers have known someone practicing law (maybe even starting law school) who has an alcohol or drug problem. We also know that our profession generally has an alarmingly high rate of chemical dependency and mental health problems. Although we see this played out in the office, we rarely see behind the scenes, into the personal toll the lawyer's impairment takes on his or her family and friends. This program gives you an opportunity to hear about that firsthand, from an attorney who's attorney brother died from alcoholism at age 49. You'll also hear from a prosecutor with the State Bar, who will tell you about how the deceased attorney's situation played out in the disciplinary system. Finally, and most importantly, you will learn about State Bar resources available to you, and your attorney friends and colleagues, to address these issues effectively and early on.
