Bus. & Prof.C. §17200 Practice -- Author Information

William L. Stern is a partner in Morrison & Foerster, LLP, San Francisco. He specializes in the defense of unfair business practices, consumer class actions, insurance, and regulatory matters. Mr. Stern presented oral argument before the California Supreme Court in Kraus v. Trinity Management Services, an important section 17200 case that we will be discussing in the program. Mr. Stern is one of the authors of Proposition 64, a voter's initiative that passed on November 2, 2004 ballot.

Mr. Stern has published numerous articles on the UCL, and has written on securities litigation (see Federal Securities Laws: The Dangers for Financial Institutions, 108 Banking.L.J. 443 (1991)), class action settlements (see Cramdown Settlements in Securities Class Actions, 21 Sec.Reg.L.J. 79 (1993)), and the fiduciary obligations of corporate officers and directors (see The Corporate Litigator, at p. 402 (ABA Press 1989)). He is a contributing editor to the Consumer Finance Law Report.

Mr. Stern received his B.A. in Political Science/English from the University of Minnesota and his J.D. from Cornell University in 1980.
